Mods, versions, features, etc.

Reflecting a current conversation on the Discord channel, but to put it here for more permanence;

With the recent DCS version SNAFU with v2.5.6, some pilots are being forced to v2.5.6 by Steam. Some have installed v2.5.6 standalone and then rolled back to v2.5.5. Despite the eye candy offered by v2.5.6, VFA-41 has declared v2.5.5 Open Beta as our current standard version until further notice.

Who gets to make this determination? How? Why?

Short answer: the CO makes the determination, based upon advice from staff officers, but mostly from this over-arching concern:

Priority for VFA-41 will always be a stable and functional multi-player platform.

That's why mods are generally frowned upon, unless they pose no risk to multi-player stability. Mods have always been at the pilot's own risk, unless officially adopted by the squadron as a required mod. Aircraft liveries is an example.

Similarly, we will not proceed to newer versions until/unless they prove viable, stable, and functional for multi-player. If they add cool, new eye candy, new weapons systems, or whatever, but the platform is not stable for multi-player, will will not use it.

If it doesn't work for multi-player, it doesn't work for VFA-41.
