The Persian Gulf is filled with dozens of cargo ships and other commercial and civilian traffic at any given time, so locating and identifying naval vessels potentially hiding among them is not an easy chore. AGM-65F IR-guided Maverick missiles were selected for the mission in order to minimize the possibility of stray missiles tracking and hitting commercial vessels.
Several Iranian warships were located. At least one launched anti-ship weapons at the carrier battle group, but each was intercepted with no damage to any vessels in the group. All Iranian warships located were attacked and destroyed with MAV-F missiles. One F/A-18 was lost due to ramp strike on recovery.
