07 FEB 2021 - Grave Danger

Post by Trim » Mon Feb 08, 2021 6:02 pm

VFA-41 was tasked with escorting an inbound flight of USAF aircraft including a KC-135, C-17s, A-10s, and F-16s. VFA-41 aircraft joined up with the USAF flight over the Black Sea. While enroute to Kutaisi. VFA-41 was diverted to assist the Destroyer USS Gravely which had become disabled and drifted into Russian waters. VFA-41 aircraft were directed to the last know location of the Gravely and were quickly able to locate it. Shortly after reaching the Gravely VFA-41 was informed of inbound bombers heading toward the disabled ship.

Although they did their best VFA-41 was out numbered and all aircraft were lost.

Although the original USAF flight did make it to it's destination and the Gravely was able to hold off the remaining attacking aircraft it is difficult to call it a successful mission.
