VFA-41 was back performing on-call air to ground strike patrols over eastern Syria this past week. In an eight-ship sortie the other morning, three flights of VFA-41 aircraft launched off of the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON in the pre-dawn darkness to take up patrol stations in the Aleppo and Palmyra areas. Each flight received notification of enemy activity in their assigned sectors and responded accordingly.
DEALER 1 was alerted to a Syrian convoy consisting of several SCUD missile launchers and support vehicles travelling towards the town of Hamaa. After a search and visual ID of several groups of moving ground targets, the appropriate convoy was located and all vehicles were destroyed with laser or GPS-guided munitions.
DEALER 2 was notified of suspected ISIS drones operating near Tabqua reservoir. Although the three aircraft in DEALER 2 flight searched the area for an extended period of time, all unidentified aircraft that were located turned out to be friendly or civilian. No enemy drones were found.
DEALER 3 was assigned a Syrian SAM site that was under construction/repair near Palmyra and destroyed multiple SAM launchers and support vehicles.
Due to the distance involved in conducting the mission, all aircraft hit the tanker on their way back to the Washington. Once Hornet diverted to Beirut.
