VFA-41 was tasked with a nighttime raid on anti-ship missile launchers on the Iranian coast as well as ships in a nearby harbor. Hawk 1 was assigned the missile launchers, Hawk 2 was assigned the ships. Hawk 3 launched first for CAP escort. While heavy airborne resistance had been encountered in previous missions in the area, none was present this time. At IP, Hawk 2 was re-tasked to destroy a submarine that was just reported making port. All assigned targets were serviced.
Upon return, the carrier inexplicably made a turn while flights were on final for recovery. The turn presented an unacceptable crosswind in zero illumination conditions, resulting in several jets crashing or running out of fuel. Not our finest hour...
Hawk 1
1 - Hedgehog: gnd tgts, crashed into escort ship on recovery.
2 - Crash: gnd tgts, ran out of fuel on recovery, ejected.
3 - Mr. Bean: gnd tgts, trapped.
Hawk 2
1 - Maniac: submarine destroyed, ships hit and destroyed, crashed on recovery.
Hawk 3
1 - Rhino: ran out of fuel on recovery, ejected.
2 - Chaos: trapped.
