20 December 2022 Pick Up/Mission Commander Qualification Strike Mission

Post by Rhino » Wed Dec 21, 2022 9:44 am

A division of VFA-41 Black Aces were tasked to conduct a precision strike on Iranian military positions on the contested island of Abu Musa in the Persian Gulf. Targets assigned were infrastructure on and around the airfield to include the fuel farm, hanger and a warehouse suspected of storing components of intermediate range ballistic missiles. Additionally, the flight was tasked with cratering the runway to prevent further airborne shipments.

All aircraft launched as a division and conducted in-flight refueling on the ingress to the target area. Once topped off with fuel, Dealer 1-3 and 1-4 were sent ahead to conduct SEAD and Fighter Sweep respectively, while Dealer 1-1 and 1-2 completed tanking. Dealer 1-3 was successful in destroying a SA-6 Kub Search and Track Radar with HARMs while simultaneously Dealer 1-4 engaged and splashed two Iranian F-4s that were on a CAP station over Abu Musa. Dealer 1-3 then proceeded to locate, engage and destroy two additional surface to air threats in the form of Maverick missiles on a pair of SA-19 Grisons roaming the airfield. Once Dealer 1-3 reported success in suppressing/destroying the air defenses, Dealer 1-1 and 1-2 proceeded to commence their attack run. Dealer 1-1 was able to get hits on the fuel farm, hanger and warehouse, however complete destruction of the warehouse was not achieved as one of two bombs went errant off target. Dealer 1-2 was only able to get one of four weapons off on the runway, but that bomb struck at the junction of the runway and the only taxi way to the apron.

Dealer 1-2 reported additional trouble with his remaining ordinance, so the decision was made to break off further attack so as not to continue lingering in the target area and invite further Iranian interceptors to engage us. All Dealer 1 aircraft rendezvoused on the way to WP12 and Dealer 1-2 was directed to divert to Al Minhad airbase due to his three remaining GBU-31v4's not being recoverable on the ship on account of max trap weight and not wanting to just jettison expensive and limited ordinance in the sea. Dealer 1-2 reported successful recovery at Al Minhad where I'm sure the currently stationed Marine Corps Hornet squadron welcomed him with open arms...

Dealer 1-1, 1-3 and 1-4 returned to the Stennis for a successful Case 1 recovery. Mission considered partial success, further BDA of the warehouse may be necessary to determine status of the ballistic missile components, but operations at the airfield have been severely degraded.

DEALER 1:
1-1 Rhino - Ground targets hit, trapped
1-2 Maniac - Ground targets hit, diverted
1-3 Hedgehog - x1 SA-6 Radar, x2 SA-19, trapped
1-4- Mr. Bean - x2 F-4 Phantom, trapped
