The VFA-41 Black Aces were tasked with destruction of a manufacturing plant near the Syrian airbase at Tabqa. Intelligence sources determined that the plant, previously producing agricultural chemicals and fertilizer, had been adapted to create explosive materials for weapons. The site was expected to be protected by various anti-air systems, with a potential for airborne resistance as well. The squadron was divided into 3 flights for escort, SEAD, and strike duties. The Mission Commander determined that 2000lb GPS-guided JDAM bombs would be employed to service the primary target, with AGM-88 HARM missiles to neutralize surface-to-air missile threats.
