SITUATION
NATO reinforcements have arrived safely in Hatay, and for the time being a buffer has been established around Hatay Airport, which is expected to be back in operation soon.
Despite heavy losses last week, Syria continues to flood the region with ground reinforcements which are staging along the border with Hatay each night. Defense analysts believe that a large quantity of arms and vehicles are being supplied to Syria by the Russians through Azerbaijan and Iran. This influx of equipment is troublesome as it looks to prolong president Assad’s venture into Hatay, despite NATO coalition opposition.
Because of this, SecDef and the JCS have authorized deeper strikes into Syrian territory against infrastructure and targets of economic or strategic value to the Assad regime. It is hoped that damage to such targets will affect Syria’s ability to purchase Russian arms and convince President Assad that the cost of continued aggression in the region will come at a price that is too high to pay.
MISSION
VFA-41 has been tasked to provide fighter sweep and SEAD escort for a flight of B-52’s (BUFF flight) that will be striking an oil pumping facility deep in Syrian territory near the town of Manbij (WP4).
The squadron will launch at 15:00 and rendezvous with BUFF flight off the northeastern tip of Cyprus.
BUFF flight is scheduled to push from the rendezvous point (WP1) at 15:45.
The route of flight will skirt north of the heavily defended city of Aleppo, but will transit an area of known air-defense sites near Minakh Air Base. To assist with the SEAD portion of the mission, a flight of two EA-6B Prowlers (ASCOT flight) will launch just ahead of us and also accompany the package to the target area and back. The Prowlers will be actively jamming, but they will not be equipped with HARMS.
Note: NOT required, but pilots desiring to see the correct aircraft model/livery for ASCOT flight can download and install the following: VSN EA-6B Prowler mod in their Saved Games/DCSopenbeta/Mods/aircraft directory
Two KC-135s (TEXACO 1, TEXACO 2) will be orbiting near the rendezvous point. Due to the length of the mission, refueling will be necessary at some point for squadron Hornets. DEALER flights arriving early to the rendezvous point, may desire to utilize the time before the package pushes from WP1 to top off their tanks before proceeding feet dry.
Escort the B-52s to the target area and back out of Syrian territory. Once over Syrian territory, engage any Syrian air defenses and/or fighter aircraft that threaten the strike package. Once safely feet wet, the bombers will continue west back to Souda Bay, at which point DEALER flights may peel off and RTB to the George Washington.
THREATS
The planned route of flight transits through an area containing a known SA-3 site and may also be within range of an SA-2 located farther to the South in Aleppo. No long or medium range SAMs are believed to be active in the vicinity of the target Oil production facility
Syrian fighter aircraft may be scrambled from Aleppo or other interior airfields. Mig-29 and/or Mig-25 aircraft pose the most significant threat, but limited reserve squadrons of Mig-23s and 21s operate out of some of the more remote back line airfields in the region.
ROE
Weapons free- All Syrian forces may be engaged as required.
