SITUATION
Swedish and Finnish forces have advanced to the outskirts of Vuojarvi, however Soviet reinforcements have arrived, so friendly forces are digging in and attempting to hold ground.
The USS Peleliu amphibious strike group is currently south of Iceland and is expected to arrive within the AOR within the next several days.
Strikes in the Lakselv area last week destroyed a large portion of Banak Airport’s remaining air defenses and heavily damaged the Soviet expeditionary base at Porsangmoen.
The one remaining structure at Porsangmoen base as well as the Soviet Outpost at Lakselv will still need to be destroyed to reduce Soviet force strength in the area before preparations can be made for an airborne assault to liberate Lakselv.
MISSION
VFA-41 will be attacking two targets being used by the Soviets to resupply and conduct ground operations in the Lakselv area.
-DEALER 1’s target will be four individual structures [WP 4-7] at the Soviet Army outpost near Lakselv that went unserviced last week due to unavailability of ready jets. Due to the target’s close proximity to the town, 1000 lb laser-guided GBU-16s will be utilized to target the four main structures in the target area.
-DEALER 2’s target will be the one remaining undamaged building, just north of the oil storage tanks at the Soviet Porsangmoen Base [WP 4]. DEALER 2 jets will be loaded with 2x Mk-83.
-DEALER 3 and DEALER TOMCATS will provide TARCAP over the strike area. A racetrack pattern should be established between WP 3 & 4 [ST] until DEALER 1 and DEALER 2 attack their targets and are egressing the area.
All DEALER flights will depart the LINCON and proceed along their respective routes. Ingress and egress routes are similar for all flights, however targeting waypoints are specific to each flight/assigned target.
This week’s flight is shorter than the two previous, so USAF tanker support has not been assigned. Two KA-6 tankers (RUSTLER and VICEROY) will launch from the LINCOLN at 0830L and take up station approximately 80 miles west of the Egress point, in case outbound tanking is required.
The sun does not rise this time of year in Northern Norway, so will be a CASE III launch and recovery. NVGs will be installed by default on all Hornets.
THREATS
After last week’s early morning strike missions were unhindered by Soviet aircraft, the Russians have resumed round the clock CAP patrols. Regular flights of Mig-29, Mig-25 and/or Mig-31 aircraft have been operating 30-70 miles east of the target area in recent days.
The SA-8s, SA-15, and most of the AAA located around the Banak/Lakselv area have been destroyed. While a few AAA emplacements remain near the airport, they are not expected to pose much of a threat.
ROE
Weapons free- Any Soviet vehicles or aircraft detected as hostile either visually, confirmed by IFF, or labeled hostile by AWACS that approach the strike package may be fired upon.
