SITUATION
With the Medium Range Surface to Air threat in the Lakselv/Banak area neutralized last week, Strikes are ongoing against Soviet targets in the area in order reduce their force strength prior to planning an operation to re-take the port and airfield.
Strikes are being conducted by the LINCOLN’s airwing, as well as Norwegian F-16s operating out of Andoya and Swedish Viggens out of Kiruna.
MISSION
VFA-41 will be escorting two strike packages on their way to attack targets in the Banak area, as well as providing general TARCAP in the airspace above the targets.
- DEALER 1 will escort a flight of 4 A-6E Intruders (VIXEN flight) that will be striking an industrial facility/technical college in Porsangermoen that the Soviets have taken over and turned into an Army outpost.
- DEALER 2 will escort a flight of 3 AJ-37 Viggens (UZI flight) that will be targeting a small Soviet Armored group east of Banak.
- DEALER 3 and any TOMACTS will provide high cover/TARCAP in the vicinity of both targets.
- VIXEN flight will be approaching the rendezvous point [WP2] from the WNW @ Angels 18
- UZI flight will be approaching the rendezvous point [WP2] from the SW @ Angels 20
DEALER 3 will parallel the packages, and upon reaching WP3 should establish TARCAP between WP 3 and WP4 until the strike packages are both outbound and enroute to their egress points
Flights will split at the egress point and all aircraft may return to base.
The KC-135’s will be located just south of the route back to the LINCOLN should any jets require refueling while RTB.
THREATS
Soviet Mig-29s, Mig-25’s, and an occasional Mig-31 often conduct their own CAP over Soviet-controlled Finnish and Norwegian territory.
Soviet ground attack aircraft are still conducting sorties out of Banak Airport which is very near the target area. Primary mission is to protect the strike packages from being intercepted and not chase low flying Soviet CAS sorties. Once the strike package is safely outbound, low/slow fliers headed to/from the front lines to the south may be engaged at will. Or, if any aircraft out of Banak threaten the strike aircraft, then they may be immediately engaged.
Surface to air threats are limited to reported SA-8 vehicles around Banak airport, and a SA-15 located 20-25 miles north/north west of the targets.
ROE
Weapons free- Any Soviet vehicles or aircraft detected as hostile either visually, confirmed by IFF, or labeled hostile by AWACS that maneuver to intercept the strike package may be fired upon.
