The Black Aces were tasked with a BARCAP role to protect the carrier battle group from attack. Intel reports suggested Iranian Su-24 Fencers with newly acquired long-range anti-ship missiles would launch and approach from the north. VFA-41 was divided into three flights, each with assigned patrol areas and altitudes.

Several Su-24s were encountered, protected by aggressive MiG-29 escorts. Flight leaders ordered weapons free and a prolonged shoot-out took place. When the dust cleared, six VFA-41 Hornets and Tomcats had been shot down defending the carrier battle group, while all Iranian warplanes were destroyed.
