SITUATION
After a U.S. military jet performed an emergency landing at a Lebanese airport without authorization, the government of Lebanon has requested Chinese aircraft patrol their air defense identification zone while engaged in a minor diplomatic spat with the U.S.
As a result, all Coalition military forces are prohibited from transiting Lebanese airspace. Violation will likely invite more diplomatic incidents and entanglements with Chinese fighters.
MISSION
After last week's remnant Assad / insurgent attack on Damascus airport, a strike has been organized to attack various identified arms storage compounds in the mountain range straddling Syria and Lebanon.
Payload size should be at least 1,000 lbs for weapon delivery on DMPIs.
Unfortunately, a weather system has moved in overnight and is producing significant cloud cover and rain, which means tonight's strike phase will be on instruments and GPS-guided weapons only.
Due to the prohibition on flying through Lebanese airspace, the carrier strike group has moved southwest by several dozen miles, and illustrative SAM markers placed in jets' situational awareness page to identify the prohibited airspace (a series of SA-2 / SA-2 / SA-6 circles).
Dealers flight 1 and flight 2 have separate targets but they are located in the same valley area. Dealer 3 has waypoints for both targets and can act as a reserve force.
Coalition forces continue to experience intermittent SA-11 pop-up attacks and despite several SEAD/ELINT missions over the week, they persist, so the mandatory 1 HARM minimum for self-protection continues.
Refueling tankers are spread across the region, there should be no problem getting a top-up if needed.
THREATS
- MANPADs everywhere that friendly forces do not control.
- Possible harassment and interception by Chinese forces over Lebanese territory.
- Pop-up SA-11 SAMs in the area between Damascus and Homs.
ROE
WEAPONS FREE (on assigned targets). It is highly likely that given targets will be in dense urban areas. Carrying a FLIR pod is mandatory and verification needed to ensure civilian areas are not struck.
