22 JUN 2020 Ardakan Yellowcake Plant SEAD

Post by Lion » Mon Jun 22, 2020 10:42 pm

Flight tasked to perform search and SEAD of a reported SA-2 site up nearby one of Iran's rumored uranium ore purification facility.

4x F/A-18s formed up and ingressed at angels 36 to a waypoint near Shiraz city, detected SA-2 emissions and fired on them with anti-radiation missiles, scoring kills on at least 3 radars. Unfortunately, one F/A-18 was lost due to collision with a friendly HARM at launch :1angry: . Remaining airframes egressed from hostile Iran, downing a cargo plane on the way out, and safely recovered aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt in the early dawn hours.

1. Lion: pri tgts, destroyed by AGM-88 :1angry: :1huh:
2. Raid: pri tgts, 1x IL-76, trapped.
3. Trim: pri tgts, trapped.
4. Hedgehog, pri tgts, trapped.

Mission successful.

To be clear, the "cargo plane" was positively designated as hostile by AWACS, and was on an intercept course. Their own radar would have been able to see three high-speed (mach 0.8) contacts heading out to sea that they were closing on. The "cargo plane" chose to continue that course.

Flying a commercial aircraft in a conflict area comes with inherent risk. Being stupid about it adds to that risk.

But civilian airliners do... and I'm presuming large cargo planes, which are often the same airframe as an airliner.

And, bottom line, if the AWACS declares it hostile, it's gonna be dead if it appears to present a threat to the flight.

Pro tip: If your travel plans include the Middle East any time soon, you may want to avoid any aircraft that look like this.

yeah, they have radar that shows weather in front of them... but its not going to pick up aircraft 40 miles out lol. And in DCS they definitely do not have any active radar. I'm not sure the plane even reacted to the AIM-120 going active...
