Guidance on the MIDS radios

Post by Raid » Wed May 06, 2020 10:35 am

With the new release of SRS we are now able to utilize the MIDS radios in the Hornet!

What is MIDS and why do I care?

The MIDS system stands for Multi-function Information Distribution System, a Link-16 standard datalink. Its responsible for the SA page in your Hornet. So yeah we like it.

What is MIDS radio?
These are the encrypted anti-jam digital voice communication channels provided on the MIDS network by the MIDS radio. What this means for us though is we get 4 radio channels in the hornet now. However its a hornet only party, no other platforms can use this system to communicate.

How are we going to use it?
For now we will use it on an as needed basis. Example Flight of 4 hornets is on CAP and needs to split into two elements. The two elements can be on separate MIDS channels so that they don't have to filter out what the other element is screaming about on regular flight comms. (see image below) It is the responsibility of the flight leads to assign these comms as needed. There are many ways we could use this system, and Im sure we will find the best way to use these radios over the next few months. ***We are still learning what will work best so be ready for change***

1. Select VOCA or VOCB
2. Enter your desired channel number
3. Hit enter to apply
NOTE: If you have the SRS overlay on it will show the channel
