The Long Range Line-up System (LRLS) is an important tool to get you back on deck during Case III recovery conditions, but it is often ignored or simply misused. Here's why:
Looking at this diagram, it seems like you should be looking for an amber light. That's not right. Here's what you're looking for:
-----------------------------
-----------------------------
DO NOT ACCEPT! You are WAY too far left of centerline. Need to come right.
-----------------------------
-----------------------------
DO NOT ACCEPT! You might think this is where you want to be, but it is not. You are lined up on centerline at this moment, but you will NOT be in a few seconds. The imaginary centerline is always moving left-to-right and it is going to leave you behind. The LRLS will turn red and you'll be chasing a red light all the way to the deck. You will find yourself left of centerline and trying to land diagonally in the landing area. Every time. Seriously.
-----------------------------
-----------------------------
YES! This is where you want to be! Keep the LRLS solid (not blinking) GREEN all the way to the ramp. It will go amber as you cross the ramp and you'll be exactly where you want to be. Promise! In order to keep it green, you will need to keep your velocity vector slightly right of the landing area. DO NOT AIM FOR THE LANDING AREA. The ship's apparent motion will always be left-to-right as you approach. If you fixate on the landing area, you will be chasing the red light again.
