Black Aces of the VFA-41 were tasked with destroying two C-130 transport aircraft on the Tarmac of Shiraz International Airport that were being loaded with believed processed uranium ore for transport out of the area.
With all but one squadron pilot available for the tasking (sickbay), eleven (11) F/A-18 aircraft were deployed from the USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT. Dealer flight one came upon the AO first and witnessed Bandit aircraft being scrambled from Shiraz airfield during their SEAD ingress. Four scrambled bandits were engaged in an ensuing dogfight over the AO that involved both Dealer 1 and 2 flights, with a result of all bandits being destroyed with one Black Ace pilot loss.
A second Black Ace pilot was downed over the AO due to reported heavy AAA and SAM fire. A parachute was seen by fellow squad pilots, but the whereabouts of this pilot are unknown.
Primary C-130 targets were successfully engaged and destroyed without crippling the runway, which is being used for humanitarian efforts by NATO and other ally contries. All remaining Black Ace pilots returned to Mother and trapped without incident.
Mission was deemed a success by Commanding and Intelligence Officers, although the loss of two of the "favorite" squadron pilots will hurt for some time.
