Three flights of VFA-41 Hornets launched in the pre-dawn darkness yesterday morning to re-attack two Iranian Silkworm missile installations that had been continuing to threaten shipping lanes through the straight of Hormuz.
Supported by a US Navy EA-6B Prowler (who crashed shortly after launch) and two USAF F-15C's out of Minhad, the flights took up station near Fujairah until the operation was cleared to proceed on towards separate targets on Qeshm and Larak Islands.
DEALER 3 pushed first and launched a series of TALD decoys and subsequently a salvo of HARM missiles at the Bandar Abbas SA-5 site that had plagued previous attempts to target the Silkworm installations. One of the HARM missiles was able to track and destroy the SA-5's tracking radar, allowing enough time for the strike aircraft behind them to press their attack.
DEALER 1's three aircraft dropped GPS-guided bombs on two different sets of targets on Larak Island. Multiple impacts were observed, and post-flight BDA imagery confirms that at least five of the 10 Silkworm launch platforms as well as multiple other support vehicles were destroyed in the attack.
DEALER 2 aircraft similarly attacked the lone Silkworm battery on Qeshm Island and their eight bombs all found their targets, completely knocking the Qeshm facility out of action.
Re-attack of remaining targets on Larak was not possible due to the presence of a pair of Iranian fighters that were closing in from the North. All DEALER aircraft egressed back towards the south while the Iranian F-4's were handled by the supporting F-15s of COLT flight.
No losses to enemy fire were suffered, but unfortunately, a mass-DCS freeze/CTD affected the majority of squadron aircraft once again on RTB. All but two of the eight VFA-41 jets froze simultaneously in mid-air and ultimately had to despawn. The remaining two pilots safely recovered aboard CVN-72.
