07 January 2024 - Operation Hormuz #9

NAVAIR forces on station in the Gulf of Oman were tasked with an on-call CAS mission over the city of Bandar Abbas. Seven Black Aces pilots launched on the mission in two flights. Once again, trouble with catapult unresponsiveness plagued the launch sequence, but eventually, all seven jets got off the deck. Once all aircraft were airborne, Dealer 1 and Dealer 2 rendezvoused at Waypoint 1 before pushing towards Waypoint 2 as a group. Upon arrival at Waypoint 2, Dealer 1 received an automatic check-in with Strike who directed us to Angels 16 and to contact JTAC Darknight on Button 11. Dealer 2 was anticipated to get a separate check-in with Strike and be assigned their own holding altitude and tasking, but that never materialized. Dealer 2 was directed by the Mission Commander to orbit at Waypoint 2 for the time being while Dealer 1 proceeded to check-in with the JTAC and receive tasking.

Darknight passed a MGRS grid coordinate in an 8-digit format, which required a bit of work on each pilots part to get it entered into the jet correctly (adding a zero at the end of the first four digits and at the end of the second four digits). Once done though, Dealer 1 aircraft eventually located the prescribed targets and ID'd them as BM-21 GRAD MLRS trucks in a walled compound. Dealer 1-1, 1-3 and 1-4 each dropped a requested GBU-12 on the artillery trucks, destroying them all to the elation of Darknight. At some point during the prosecution of the target, Dealer 1-2 ventured a little too low and became victim to a MANPAD (or two), ejecting over the battle area. Current whereabouts unknown.

While Dealer 1 was prosecuting the first target set, the Mission Commander directed Dealer 2 to top off fuel at a near by tanker, which they accomplished in short order. After Dealer 1 finished off the artillery, we broke off to refuel ourselves at another tanker nearby, which proved quite difficult for Dealer 1-1 as the tanker was flying a right hand "box" track instead of a standard left hand race track pattern, making the tanker turns and corrections unpredictable. While Dealer 1 was tanking, further coordinates were passed for additional artillery targets by Darknight and this target information was passed to Dealer 2 for prosecution while Dealer 1 completed refueling.

Dealer 2 was able to destroy four additional BM-21's after which Darknight said we could depart. After checking in with Strike, additional tasking became available and as Dealer 1 had full tanks and plenty of ordinance, the Mission Commander directed them to handle this task. Dealer 1 was passed to JTAC Firefly and eventually some AAA targets were located and destroyed by Dealer 1 using AGM-65E Mavericks. Once complete, all remaining Dealer aircraft recovered CASE 1 aboard CVN-71.

Mission was a complete success despite loosing one airframe and pilot to enemy fire. :1cool:
