VFA-41 was tasked with destruction of the Syrian airbase at Palmyra.
Dealer 1 was assigned SEAD duties with AGM-88C HARMs plus secondary strike objectives of hardened aircraft hangars. Dealer 2 was assigned the primary objective of putting the runway out of service.
Both flights were cleared for Case III recovery upon return to the carrier. However, when the first plane attempted to land, the deck was foul with an unlit MH-60 Seahawk in the landing area that could not be seen in the dark, and 2-1 collided with it. This was a clear LSO failure. The pilot should have been waved off for foul deck. The event will not count against the pilot's record.
Consequently all remaining aircraft had to land at a divert field. 2-1 refueled from the recovery tanker and landed on Cypress. Dealer 1 had enough fuel and headed to Hatay. 1-1 landed safely, 1-2 suffered a disconnect.
Dealer 1
1 - Mr. Bean: SAM hit, ground targets hit, diverted.
2 - Dirty Dan: SAM hit, ground targets hit, disconnected.
Dealer 2
1 - Hedgehog: runway hit, diverted.
2 - Maniac: runway hit, collision on deck with parked helo (LSO failure).
MISSION SUCCESS. All primary and secondary objectives hit.
