VFA-41 was tasked with intercepting a converted cargo plane that was being used to transport high ranking Iranian military officials. The target aircraft was expected to be escorted by Mig-29s.
Three flights were sent, Dealer 1 was to intercept and destroy the target. Dealer 2 was to destroy a SAM site in order open a path to the target's planned flight path. Dealer 3 was tasked with drawing away any escorts.
All flights departed Stennis and formed up together to make a timed attack. Dealer 3 went out first to draw away the escorts. They were able to draw away some of the escorts but some remained with the target aircraft. Dealer ingressed next heading for the known SAM location. They were able to eliminate the SAM threat then headed back.
Dealer 1 went in just behind Dealer 2. After confirming the SAM had been eliminated Dealer one identified was was believed to target aircraft and several other hostile aircraft with it. At which point Dealer 2 was told to assist with the remaining escorts. Dealer 1 and 2 were able to eliminate all the escorts and the target aircraft. Unfortunately, a civilian aircraft was also caught in the mix and was shot down as well. Dealer 3 was able to eliminated to escorts that the lured away. Although one Dealer aircraft was lost as well.
All remaining aircraft returned to Stennis and trapped.
