SITUATION

This week the squadron will attempt to build on the BVR Timeline training we've received the past several weeks and introduce the concept of splitting a division into multiple sections and employing the BVR "Grinder" tactic.

The basic premise of the the tactic involves the second section trailing behind the lead section such that once the first section launches their missiles and eventually turns cold, the second section is now getting to within launch range. Thereafter, as one section turns cold, the other turns back hot, and keeps constant offensive pressure on the enemy.

The tactic is described in more detail in the following video: https://youtu.be/MoKzgFrgFQY

Each Dealer flight will operate independently on separate ranges with different intercept controllers

Mission Commander’s note: No F-14s are available this week.

MISSION

Winds are from the north, and flights will depart via Runway 3. DEALER 1 will be working in the West Range Complex and will utilize the FYTTR Departure. DEALER 2 and 3 will be working in the North Range complex so will depart via the DREAM SIX departure. Flight leads will be directed to contact Blackjack upon range entry at JUNNO/JAYSN and will subsequently be given their range assignments by Blackjack.
  • Once cleared to their range, flights will be directed to proceed to a named anchor point (WP2). When directed, flights will switch to SHOWTIME control.
Once on station at the anchor point, SHOWTIME will call out targets referencing BULLSEYE (WP59) and direct the flight to intercept.
  • Enemy aircraft type and altitudes will vary for each of the three events today. Once directed to commit to a target, flight leads should place their second section (or wingman if only a flight of two) in a 15-20 mile trail to set up for the BVR Grinder tactic.
  • Individual sections should then utilize the appropriate BVR timeline and attempt to shoot down each group of enemy fighters while minimizing risk/exposure to enemy fire.
  • As one section skates/turns cold, the second section should turn back hot - communication between section leads will be essential to maintain everyone's situational awareness.
  • If the tactical situation is not favorable and the division lead decides not to continue their attack, flights may skate back towards WP2. Once within 3-4 miles of WP2 the enemy fighters will be called off and discontinue their pursuit.
For all three events, the enemy targets will be cleared once a DEALER flight returns back to WP2 (or they are shot down) and the subsequent event will be commenced after a brief delay.

Upon completion of tasking, flights will be directed to their respective range exit points (WP3) and RTB Nellis.

Mission tankers are available if needed. ARCO will be operating in the eastern part of the range, TEXACO will be operating in the western part of the range.

THREATS

Threats today are varied. The following red aircraft may be encountered:

SU-27 (R-27 ER)
Mig-21 (R-3) (Note: for 3rd generation fighters with less advanced/shorter range missiles, utilize the R-27R Timeline - this will be more than sufficient to keep you out of lethal range)
Mig-29 (AA-12)
F-4 (AIM-7)

For the purposes of training, DEALER flights will be invulnerable to enemy fire (simulated hit notifications will be provided) and will have unlimited missiles.

R4808A (Dreamland) will be inactive.

ROE

Follow the prescribed route of flight and any directives issued by ATC/Range Control.

All aircraft are reminded that it is squadron SOP to monitor GUARD frequency (121.5/253.0) on COMM2. This will be required at all times in the range complex for high priority information and traffic deconfliction purposes.
