01 May 2022 - Damascus Dawn Week 16

Post by MrBean » Tue Apr 26, 2022 9:51 am

SITUATION

NATO airstrikes against military targets in and around the city of Aleppo have continued over the past two weeks with more planned for this coming week.

Meanwhile, NATO ground forces are slowly advancing south and east from the captured Minakh Airbase, but Syrian opposition is strengthening as NATO closes in on Aleppo. Syria is calling up reinforcements and reserve brigades from the south and replenishing front line units almost as fast as they are being destroyed.

US Navy aircraft are being fragged to assist over the allied line of advance, as USAF Warthog and Marine Harrier aircraft and crews have been operating at an unsustainable pace - providing nearly round the clock CAS coverage along the front.

MISSION

This morning, VFA-41 has been tasked to provide Close Air Support (CAS) and Battlefield Interdiction (BAI) over the front lines. We will launch at 0600 and are to remain on station until relieved at 0730, unless weapons expended or fuel status requires an earlier RTB.

The front line currently stretches for 25 miles, running roughly SW-NE. WP3 and WP5 mark the southern and northern points of the front, with WP4 located approximately at the midpoint.

Any and all ground targets spotted along or east the front may be engaged, however DO NOT FIRE upon any vehicles WEST of the WP3-4-5 line as they are likely friendly.

In order to assist with target acquisition and tracking, two predator drones will also be airborne over the front to provide JTAC services. One JTAC will be working the southern half of the front, one JTAC will be working the northern half of the front.

We can expect the JTACs to both lase and smoke their targets, making both laser and visually guided munitions suitable for employment.

A mid-layer (12K) broken or overcast sky is forecast, so aircraft may have to operate at lower than preferred altitudes in order to acquire lased or visual targets. Accordingly, be on the lookout for small arms, AAA and manpad threats while searching for and engaging targets.

TEXACO will be on station over Hatay airport for ingress/egress or loiter refueling.

THREATS

Our operating area today is outside the threat range from any Syrian radar-guided SAM installations. As noted above, low level manpads and AAA may be mixed in with Syrian units along the front.

A NATO fighter sweep will press through the area before dawn to clear out any Migs on CAP duty. Do not expect much of a Syrian air threat this morning, however, be on the lookout for any low flying Syrian ground attack aircraft or helicopters attempting to cross the front lines and engage friendly forces.

Allied CAP will be on station overhead operating just to the West of the front lines, just in case.

ROE

Weapons Restricted- Only ground targets EAST of the WP3-4-5 line may be engaged.

Just a note from mission testing: Due to lighting conditions and ground contrast in the target area, if you are running the "Better Smoke" mod - you may want to consider temporarily disabling it for this mission. Target smoke markers can be difficult to spot with the "better" smoke (esp in VR with limited zoom)
