More SAM Sites Attacked in South Ossetia

US Intelligence sources indicated the presence of additional 'pop-up' surface-to-air missile sites being set-up in a mountainous area in the breakaway republic of South Ossetia that presented a continued threat to air travel to and from airports in Georgia.  F/A-18C Hornets of the VFA-41 "Black Aces" squadron were sortied to employ HARM anti-radiation missiles to put the targeting radars out of service.  While the separatists appear to have access to many missile launchers, they are virtually useless without the much more expensive radar units.  Additional mission details were made public HERE.

Surface-to-Air Missile Battery Destroyed

Attack aircraft were sortied from the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier battle group in the Black Sea to locate and destroy a surface-to-air missile (SAM) site that was reported to be soon operational in the mountains of north Georgia with the intention of disrupting air traffic to and from airports in the area.  "HARM" anti-radiation missiles and "Maverick" infrared guided missiles were employed to put the site out of action.  Pentagon officials confirmed two F/A-18C Hornet attack planes engaged in the mission were lost to shoulder-fired missiles.  The pilots were seen to eject from their aircraft, though their conditions were not immediately known.  Further details were released HERE.
