Russia Denies Incursions Despite Threats of Retaliation

The US ambassador to Russia offered apologies as well as rumored economic consolations in response to an inadvertent shoot down of two helicopters near the Georgian border, while continuing to warn against flights over the contested areas between Georgia and two break-away republics.  Meanwhile, NATO-sanctioned security flights have continued in the border region.  On Sunday, flights of US Navy all-weather F/A-18 Hornets of the VFA-41 "Black Aces" squadron conducted a security patrol and reported engaging and shooting down four Russian-made MiG-29 and Su-30 fighter jets that had crossed the border and demonstrated hostile intent.  However, neither Russia nor any other faction in the conflict area have claimed any loss.  All US aircraft returned safely to the USS Theodore Roosevelt.  Mission details are available HERE.  Who actually owned the downed jets remains under investigation.

Russia Demands Accountability for Downing of Helicopters During NATO Attack

Amid heightened tensions in the border region, US Navy warplanes were ordered to locate and destroy a suspected weapons convoy moving from Russia into Georgia.  While the convoy was thought to be ferrying munitions to one of the separatists states in the area, Russian observers were understandably concerned about military action on their border.  A US Navy spokesman confirmed reports of two bridges in Georgia destroyed as well as several vehicles, though the Russian ambassador to the US claimed that two unarmed observer helicopters were shot down over Russian airspace, and is threatening a retaliatory response.  The Pentagon has ordered an investigation into that claim, as well as reports of the downing of a US Air Force aerial refuling aircraft supporting the mission.  A US Navy pilot also reported being attacked by, and subsequently shooting down, a MiG-29 fighter jet, but Russia has denied having any military aircraft in the area.  Additional mission details were released HERE.

Black Aces Carry out 'DEAD' Mission Tasking On Georgian Border

While there is currently no open hostility in the high-tension Georgian region, a mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system has been threatening both military and civilan air traffic into and out of the Tblisi-Lochini airport.  VFA-41 was ordered to locate and destroy the SAM equipment in a 'DEAD' (destruction of enemy air defenses) mission.  Two Russian-made SA-2 SAM sites were detected and serviced with AGM-88C "HARM" radar-seeking missiles and AGM-65F "Maverick" infra-red guided missiles.  Both sites were put out of commission.  Additional mission retails were provided HERE.  Depending on whom you ask, I guess you could say there is now open hostility in the region.  The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier battle group is on high alert watching for a response.
