USAF B-52s Destroy Iranian Airbase

US Air Force B-52 heavy bombers attacked and destroyed an airbase in Iran in an early morning raid.  The airbase had been used as a launch point for recent Iranian military hostility against commerical shipping and air traffic in the region.  US Navy F/A-18 Hornets assigned to the carrier USS John. C. Stennis, stationed in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Urgent Guardian, flew sorties preceding the strike to eliminate surface-to-air missile threats as well as to escort the bombers.  At least one Iranian MiG-29 fighter was shot down, according to reports, and a Navy fighter was also lost to a surface-to-air missile during the raid.  Further mission details were released HERE.

US Navy Warplanes Foil Attempted Hijacking

Pentagon sources confirmed local news reports from the UAE that American fighter jets assisted a commercial jetliner after a mayday call that it had been forced off course by presumed Iranian military aircraft.  F/A-18C and F-14 interceptors of the VFA-41 "Black Aces" launched from the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis, currently stationed in the Persian Gulf.  They located and engaged Iranian MiG-21 warplanes, downing both of them.  Unfortunately, two US aircraft were also shot down in the engagement, and another was lost when it ran out of fuel when returning to the carrier.  The jetliner was bound for Dubai International Airport, where it was able to continue after stopping at a safe airfield to refuel.  Additional details were made available HERE.  The airline and its passengers expressed gratitude to the brave US fighter pilots!
