More Tankers Attacked in Persian Gulf

Following days of heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf region, Iranian State Media reported that three more oil tankers had been attacked and damaged near the Strait of Hormuz.  US reconnaissance aircraft launched from the USS John C. Stennis carrier battle group flew to the area to evaluate the situation.  While en route, an attack was detected, with three tankers on fire when the flight arrived on scene, leading to questions as to how Iranian media reported an attack that evidently hadn't happened yet.  While the Iranian government continues to deny any involvement in the attacks, some military strategists suggested that its state media may have had advanced knowledge of impending attacks and accidently reported them prematurely.  Meanwhile, the US Navy reported that its aircraft flying over international waters were attacked by a single MiG-21 Russian-made fighter jet, known to be flown by the Iranian Air Force.  The Area Commander stated that the MiG-21 was shot down, though this has not been confirmed by Iranian authorities.

Iran Files Formal Grievance with UN

The Iranian delegation to the United Nations Security Council yesterday filed a formal grievance against the United States and NATO for actions they claim downed four unarmed aircraft near their sovereign territory.  According to the complaint, US warplanes attacked and shot down the military aircraft, unprovoked, as they were flying from one Iranian airbase to another.  The Pentagon has not issued an official statement related to the complaint, though unofficial reports seem to substantiate the claims that Iranian aircraft were shot down, with other details remaining unclear.  In any event, whether it was the intent of the Iranian government or not, tensions in the area are now greatly escalated.  One NATO advisor was quoted as saying that "... the American hot-heads are going to have to show more restraint in their operations in the area or there's going to be an all-out war."

Pentagon Announces Operation Urgent Guardian

Subsequent to sending the USS John C. Stennis carrier battle group to the Persian Gulf region in a show of force, the Pentagon has announced that military operations in the region in response to Iranian military build-up and threats against US installations will be conducted under the name Urgent Guardian.  A spokesman for the Chief of Naval Operations confirmed that sorties have already been flown by US Navy F/A-18C Hornets assigned to the VFA-41 squadron.  He said that US aircraft have not entered Iranian airspace, though unconfirmed reports indicated that several Iranian warplanes were shot down over international waters.  The Pentagon would not confirm the details of an unofficial report found HERE.  However, the White House press secretary has stated that all military options remain on the table in order to protect US interests in the region.
